Biological activity:

FCCP (Trifluoromethoxycarbonylcyanidephenylhydrazone, Carbonylcyanide4-(trifluoromethoxy)phenylhydrazone) acts as an effective uncoupling agent for oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria, destroying ATP synthesis by transporting protons.

Use:

A protonophore (H+ ionophore) and uncoupler of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. It induces depolarization of plasma membrane and mitochondrial membranes. FCCP can affect various activities involving cellular calcium ions. It can also inhibit K+ background current and induce a small amount of inward current, lower the pH by 0.1 units, and induce an increase in intracellular [Na+].
